Participate as an institution

As an institution within the area of education, your employees and students may become eduroam users. They get the advantage of internet access when visiting other institutions and where eduroam otherwise is available.

An institution using eduroam is called an identity provider. Most often, the service is also provided within their own surroundings making the institution combine the two roles of service and identity provider.

This gives a proportion of their visitors internet access without having to set up guest accounts.

Technical design

Eduroam gives users access to the internet. The user must be known at her home institution. When the user's device associates with the Wi-Fi network, a request is sent to the home institution. Only if the institution acknowledges the user access is granted.

This is accomplished by using port-based network access control (IEEE 802.1X).

Eduroam in city networks

Since 2015, several municipalities have offered access to eduroam from the wireless networks they make available for their citizens. This makes eduroam expand from only covering educational and research institutions to offering users access when they are not at an institution.

The users of eduroam must remain within the area of education and research. The expansion of urban networks simply means that these users now may enjoy eduroam when they are at the library, visiting citizen service or other places where the municipality offers wireless access.
